Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), also known as biomethane, is a pipeline-quality gas that is fully interchangeable with conventional natural gas. It can be used in vehicles just like standard natural gas. It is the gaseous byproduct of organic matter decomposition, that has been refined to meet purity standards. This refinement process, known as conditioning or upgrading, removes impurities such as water, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, and other trace elements, resulting in a high-methane content.

RNG produced through biochemical processes like anaerobic digestion or thermochemical processes like gasification, can be used to generate electricity and heat with minimal cleanup. However, for vehicle applications, biogas must undergo additional processing to achieve the higher purity required for pipeline-quality gas. Once upgraded, RNG is suitable for use as a transportation fuel in the form of compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG). RNG qualifies as an advanced biofuel under the Renewable Fuel Standard, highlighting its role in sustainable energy solutions.
