Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is an alternate fuel derived from municipal solid waste, algae, agricultural waste, plant-oil, animal-oil, and other non-petroleum feedstocks that is currently reducing emissions from the aviation sector.

Aviation contributes 2% to global CO2 emissions and 12% to transportation-related emissions. To counter this, ICAO’s CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation) scheme aims to cap net CO2 emissions at 2020 levels through 2035, while the industry targets net zero carbon by 2050.

SAF can be produced through various technology pathways, each with its own set of specifications and blending limitations as approved by ASTM International. These pathways include, but are not limited to, Hydro-processed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA), Fischer-Tropsch Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene (FT-SPK), and Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ).
