BURN

BURN, Africa’s leading clean cooking company, has officially received a Letter of Authorization from the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ministry of Environment, Sustainable Development and the New Climate Economy to participate in international carbon markets. This authorization, granted under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, marks the first step for BURN and its partners to sell carbon credits to CORSIA, the global offsetting scheme for the aviation industry. As the first authorization of its kind signed in the DRC, the agreement highlights the government’s commitment to climate finance and green manufacturing. The deal enables BURN, alongside partners such as Key Carbon, to generate and transfer 930,000 carbon credits from its local clean cooking activities. By leveraging this carbon finance, BURN can heavily subsidize its fuel-efficient appliances, dropping the price of a $50 stove to as little as $10 for Congolese families. Since starting operations in the DRC in 2017, the company has invested over $18 million and distributed roughly 400,000 stoves, aiming to combat the deforestation driven by informal charcoal production. Minister Professor Marie Nyange Ndambo noted that the partnership is vital for preserving the Congo Basin forests, which store approximately 8% of global forest carbon. The project is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve indoor air quality, and accelerate access to modern energy solutions.
