Deep Sky has taken a major step in scaling carbon removal by deploying Airbus’s advanced Direct Air Capture technology at its flagship Deep Sky Alpha facility in Alberta, Canada. The newly delivered modular DAC unit can remove 250 tons of CO2 annually and was engineered and manufactured in just eight months. Adapted from Airbus life support systems used on the International Space Station, the system uses a solid amine filter to capture CO2 from ambient air, then releases a concentrated stream using an energy efficient temperature swing process. Deep Sky Alpha, the world’s first carbon removal innovation and commercialization center, is already hosting multiple DAC partners and generating CDR credits, making it a fast growing hub for next generation carbon removal solutions. The company is rapidly expanding its infrastructure, backed by strong momentum including a 40 million dollar grant from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst and long term credit purchase commitments from Royal Bank of Canada and Microsoft. Deep Sky aims to scale technologies capable of removing billions of tons of CO2 and views its partnership with Airbus as a key milestone in that mission.
