The European Investment Bank (EIB) has committed €20 million to the inaugural €300 million green bond issued by Estonian energy company Eesti Energia. The five-year bond will support investments in renewable energy generation, electricity networks, energy storage, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure across Estonia and the wider Baltic region. The transaction marks the EIB’s first investment in a green senior bond in the Baltic region and is intended to support the development of sustainable finance and capital markets in the region. According to the EIB, the bond issuance attracted strong investor interest, with demand reaching approximately €1.9 billion, significantly exceeding the amount offered. Bond proceeds will be used to finance projects that enhance renewable energy deployment, expand electricity networks to facilitate greater integration of renewable resources, develop battery energy storage capacity, and support the rollout of electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The investments are expected to contribute to strengthening energy security and supporting climate neutrality objectives in Estonia and neighboring Baltic markets. The EIB participated as an anchor investor in the transaction, with the institution stating that its involvement is intended to help mobilize additional private-sector capital while supporting transparency and high standards within the regional green bond market. The investment comes at a time when strengthening the resilience and reliability of the Baltic electricity system remains a key regional priority. Eesti Energia noted that the capital raised through the green bond will support continued investment in renewable energy, electricity networks, and storage solutions aimed at enhancing energy security and long-term competitiveness in the Baltic region. The operation aligns with the EIB’s broader role as the EU climate bank and its ongoing support for projects focused on energy transition, sustainable infrastructure, and economic resilience.
