Offshore Wind Growth Partnership

The Offshore Wind Growth Partnership (OWGP) has awarded £1 million in funding to seven UK companies to accelerate the development and commercialisation of next-generation technologies for the offshore wind industry.

The funding is being provided through OWGP’s Innovation Funding programme, which supports near-to-market and market-ready technologies designed to address technical and commercial challenges across the offshore wind supply chain.

The seven successful companies are Acuity Robotics, Akselos, Crondall Energy, Fathom, Quoceant, Sperra Seaworks and T12 Engineering. The companies are based across Scotland and North and South England.

The funded projects focus on two areas identified by the Industrial Growth Plan as having significant potential for developing UK capability and capturing future offshore wind market opportunities: industrial foundations and substructures, and substations and electrical design.

The projects cover a range of technologies, including robotic inspection of offshore monopile transition pieces, optimisation of offshore wind substructure manufacturing and assembly, mooring services, digital twin technology, 66kV electrical connection systems, concrete suction anchors for floating offshore wind, and floating mooring systems.

OWGP said the funding will help the companies fast-track their technologies towards commercial deployment, generate evidence of performance and prepare for future commercial opportunities. The programme is intended to strengthen UK capability and competitiveness across the global offshore wind supply chain.

Industrial foundations and substructures are identified in the Industrial Growth Plan as a significant market opportunity as offshore wind turbines increase in size and are deployed in deeper waters. The plan identifies a potential £209 billion global market opportunity in this area.

The second priority area, future electrical systems, builds on the UK’s existing capabilities in electrical engineering and offshore systems. Development in this area is intended to support higher-capacity transmission, more complex offshore networks and future offshore wind deployment.

The Innovation Funding competition was backed by industry champions Equinor and SSE. Representatives from both companies highlighted the importance of innovation in manufacturing, structural design, power transmission and system integration as offshore wind projects become larger and move into deeper waters.

OWGP Project Manager Tom Speedie said the awards demonstrate the organisation’s commitment to supporting technologies and businesses that can strengthen the UK’s offshore wind supply chain over the long term.

The seven companies will now begin the next phase of their projects with OWGP support, progressing their technologies and working towards commercialisation.

OWGP is an independent, not-for-profit organisation established in 2019 by the Offshore Wind Industry Council (OWIC). It works with industry to strengthen the UK offshore wind supply chain and improve its global competitiveness through targeted funding, industry expertise and business support.
